چکیده
Rosie Redfi eld is Professor of Zoology at the University of British Columbia, where she has been since 1990. Her research investigates the evolution and molecular biology of natural transformation in bacteria (her cocktail-party summary is “Do bacteria have sex?”). She blogs about her research at RRResearch. blogspot.com, where a recent blog post received a lot of attention from both scientists and the media because it critiqued the NASAfunded research claiming that arsenic can replace phosphorus in DNA.

Influence of phonons on exciton transfer dynamics: comparison of the Redfield, F€ orster, and modified Redfield equations
The effect of the reorganization of phonons on exciton transfer dynamics is examined. Starting from a general quantum master equation, we obtain population transfer rates for the Redfield, the F€ orster, and the modified Redfield equations and compare the predictions of these three models over various ranges of parameters. It is shown that the validity of the traditional Redfield equation is ju...
متن کاملMagnitude of oceanic nitrogen fixation influenced by the nutrient uptake ratio of phytoplankton
The elemental stoichiometry of sea water and particulate organic matter is remarkably similar. This observation led Redfield to hypothesize that the oceanic ratio of nitrate to phosphate is controlled by the remineralization of phytoplankton biomass1. The Redfield ratio is used universally to quantitatively link the marine nitrogen and phosphorus cycles in numerous biogeochemical applications2–...
متن کاملServerification of Molecular Modeling Applications: The Rosetta Online Server That Includes Everyone (ROSIE)
The Rosetta molecular modeling software package provides experimentally tested and rapidly evolving tools for the 3D structure prediction and high-resolution design of proteins, nucleic acids, and a growing number of non-natural polymers. Despite its free availability to academic users and improving documentation, use of Rosetta has largely remained confined to developers and their immediate co...
متن کاملRedfield Reduced Dynamics and Entanglement
In phenomenological applications the time evolution of subsystems immersed in an external environment are sometimes described by Markovian semigroups of Redfield type that result non-positive: the appearence of negative probabilities is avoided by restricting the admissible initial conditions to those states that remain positive under the action of the dynamics. We show that this often adopted ...
